st. patty's rubbings 1


print pictures of st. patrick's day things and trace over printed lines with white glue. allow to dry. students set newsprint over pictures and do a rubbing and the picture from the other side appears. can be done with any dried glue drawings.

folded paper puppets 1


take paper and fold into a large triangle, fold smaller triangle over to create arms. students decorate front and back of arms so when they move the arms both sides can be seen. have teams create a short skit.

hand designs 1



students trace overlapping hands several times and color within shapes created by the crossing lines. used to teach overlap, shape and line.

lines show motion 1


students create cartoon like drawings of things that move using lines in their picture to demonstrate how the things are moving. teach in conjunction with rhythm and movement.

draw the rules contest 1


students are told about the classroom rules and draw a picture of one or more of the rules for a prize. encourages understanding and memorization of rules. do at beginning of year and at semester for reminder.

color objects 1


students choose one color and make three objects that represent that color.

cool colors warm colors 1


students are given large grid graph paper and trace a large shape in the middle. they then choose 2 warm colors and 2 cool colors to color it in switching when a line from the shape crosses the grid.

pattern test 1


students are given random colors and shapes and asked to create a pattern with it by glueing them on a long strip. this is an active test for end of pattern lesson, no help is given.

glitter eggs 1


students color a design on pattern on an egg shape and then draw over some lines with glue for a glitter sprinkle.

salted shamrock 1


teach techniques of how to do a watercolor salting on a shamrock cutout w/ a green wash.

drug free signs 1



red ribbon week project. study street signs and use them for inspiration for drug free signs to put around school.

turkey card 1


trace foot to make turkey body. add feather, hat, face etc.

valentine animals 1



assembled - cut and glue. add decor to theme try to think of different animals you can make.

collage bunny w/ cotton tail 1


have each student cut all pieces from one interesting paper and then trade pieces with friends to get many interesting different colors. piece together to make bunny, add cotton ball tail and background to taste.

hand turkey w/ glue feathers 1

trace hand for turkey. add feather lines in fingers and cut out feather (or use real feathers if available) to put in between fingers for accent.

flip book faces 1



students make flipbook of different faces and expressions. print out shapes of head, minimum of three per child. discuss different emotions and give a list of them for students to choose from for faces. explain each face must carry different emotion. when all are done cut along lines and staple together in book.

tribal mask 1



students recieve various tribal mask of their choice. discuss areas they come from and what masks are used for. print masks on card stock and children color to their taste. cut out eyeholes and add string.

book names w/ pattern design 1



student create their own journal/ sketchbook. construction paper folded, draw name, color and add patterning around edges. add folded paper in middle, cut 3 triangles through seam, sew together.

wax resist landscape 1

discuss different types of environments - introduce concept of landscape (desert, mountain, volcano, island, beach, forest, jungle etc.) draw with pencil, go over with crayon taking care to push down hard, water color over for wax resist.

mother's day flower card 1


tissue flowers in multiple designs glued to make a bouquet for a mother's day card.

color wheel made by mixing colors. triangles showing primary and secondary colors.

house and street 1


students draw street scene paying attention to details such as street signs, fire hydrants, road lines etc. then create their own house with construction paper to add into their street design.

collage names 1


student look in magazines for either things they like, or for things about school. they cut out these things, write their names in large letters (or bubble letters in capable) and cover word with pictures. good start of the year project to learn names.

shapes trace train 1

trains created from basic shape stencils. compile them together to make a train and tracks, alternatively you can give students pre cut basic shapes to glue together into a train (all different sized squares and rectangles works best, with 1 triangle for engine front)

fill in prints 1



prints made from cuting out a hole stencil and filling in. dry and repeat overlapping. can be done with clipart pictures for holidays.

Block out prints 1




prints made from a stencil or blocked out cut paper. two colors can be used. can also be done with cut out clipart for holiday pictures

Sandy beach 1

assemblage project. draw sun and shells on separate paper, cut out, assemble together and fill w/ sand.

Stuffed fish (w/ Steamers) 1






create fish designs/templates. students color and add scales, seal project, stuff, and add steamer decor. great to hang in hallways.

bear 1


cut paper and paste - using stencils to make circles and assemblage.

created w/ ink rolled on Styrofoam and drawn with a q-tip.

contrast shapes and patterns 1




give students different sized black and white circles to cut and have them seperate them into pile and create repeating schemes. talk about how black and white create contrast in piece.
