draw the rules contest 3


students are told about the classroom rules and draw a picture of one or more of the rules for a prize. encourages understanding and memorization of rules. do at beginning of year and at semester for reminder.

name line design 3


drawn name in bubble letters. over paper wind a line curving around loosely. in each shape created by different lines make tight lines going in different directions. occasional spaces may be left emptycolor with a single color for each different direction line.

weavings 3


w/ pictures of people or recognizable objects in middle. use green red and black for black history.

spider webs 3



students draw spider webs w/ glue and sprinkle glitter on. they take yarn and tie together spiders onto their webs.

castles 3




students create their own castle with tagboard. towers can optionally be added to side. glue or tape together to make 3D.

constellations 3



students make a line drawing animal and turn it into a connect the dot drawing. they then transfer the drawing onto a black paper, add a space background, and color it all w/ either oil pastel or gelFX markers. a push pin is then used to poke star holes in the picture and around the animal. hang in window for light to shine through holes.

monochrome mask paintings 3


students are given a mask design and are to paint it with tints, tones and shades of a single color.

object color wheel 3


students are to come up with an object for each color on the color wheel and draw and color each object in it's position. have them make lists first to ensure students are doing at least some different objects. themes can also be used like food or animals or household objects.

contrast pattern 3


students draw a picture on white paper and then cut out all pieces on both black and a lighter color. peices are then set up on opposite color paper and glues in the exact same positions.

Dot painting 3



students draw a design w/ a living thing as a focal point in center. surround with abstract designs in repeating styles. color w/ 4 or fewer different color crayons taking care to color hard and dark filling all white paper. painting is done over crayon w/ q-tip. one color is selected to use on each crayon color (white being a required color). different sized dots are made by trimming the q-tip. dots are to surround edges or create patterns within color shapes. the more dots the better it comes out, so encourage complex patterning.

Valentine animals 3



cut and paste heart to create animals for valentines day decor or actual valentines. encourage students to create their own animal designs too.

large wax resist 3


do a full drawing w/ background and foreground in pencil and then outline in crayon taking care to push down hard. add some detail in crayon pushing down hard but DO NOT color in fully. make sure some detail is done in white. water color over doing a wash in some areas.

portfolios 3


students create a folder to store their assignments w/ name, grade level, and class. docoration added to tastes.

collage bodies w/ prints 3


students make stamped or printed paper. they then trace a partners body and cut the different appendages out of different papers to collage together. quicker version can be done with wallpaper or wrapping paper (although more flimsy).

family tree 3


pre cut or self cut leaves. students make trunk with "family" written - encourage designer letters) to put leaves on and add names of family members and decorations on leaves (little flowers or fruits such as apples work very well) put leaves on in direction for family tree. great mother's day present.

black and white cut paper and paste.
